for solo harp
For Arpa is a composition for solo harp by Franco Margola.
From the introductory note:
The piece published here has arrived in a single autographed copy. Like many of his pieces for solo instrument, it does not have its own title, but bears the exclusive instrumental destination “Per arpa”. Not even a time indication is given. The autograph does not bear a date and the simplicity of the compositional structure does not allow a comparison with other works.
However, the handwriting, characterized by small note heads and rods drawn with the ruler, make it consistent with the autographs of the last period of activity.
This short composition is placed as a unicum in the author’s production. it is in fact the only work for harp composed by him. This data is rather singular, also in consideration of the wide use that the contemporaries of Margola made of the instrument.
In any case, two characteristics of this brief composition denote a knowledge of the instrument: the tone of the system, which certainly benefits the sonority of the harp, and the texture that facilitates the usual fingerings of the instrument. It seems plausible to me that the short composition could have been commissioned to the author within the teaching activities of the Parma Conservatory, where the author served in the last phase of his teaching career.
